Bhubaneswar: Senior BJD leader and former minister Damodar Rout proposed implementation of 'no work, no pay' rule in the Odisha Assembly after another session of the House on Wednesday witnessed repeated adjournments amid ruckus created by opposition party leaders over various issues.
Rout said the legislators should be paid according to their work; receiving full pay for reduced proportion of work is not a good exercise. "The daily allowance to the MLAs should be paid on an hourly basis which must be determined on the hours of Odisha Assembly proceedings," he added.
Congress chief whip Tara Prasad Bahinipati appreciated the proposal and said, "It is not right to pay TA, DA to the legislators until proceedings of the House run smoothly. I welcome the proposal of no work, no pay."
BJP's legislature party leader Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo said his party will extend its support if such a proposal is introduced in the Odisha Assembly.
Earlier in the day, the Speaker had adjourned the House three times as Congress MLAs continued to disrupt the house proceedings while blaming the Puri temple administration for failing to restore normalcy in rituals of the deities. Bahinipati also warned that the party will not allow the House to function unless the government restores normalcy in rituals.
