Bhubaneswar: While the Commissionerate Police is set to wind-up the death case of Unmay Padhi, whose half-burnt body was recovered from Kuakhai area on the outskirts of the city, after terming it a suicide; the family members of the deceased today challenged the suicide theory and alleging foul play, said that they would seek re-investigation into the case.
“As a brother I would say that Unmay was a person with mental strength and he would never stoop to such low levels and commit suicide and that too at a place far away from the house on the Kuakhai River bed! If he had to take such an extreme step then he could have done that inside the home without having to go elsewhere,” Unmay’s brother, Chinmay Padhi said.
"There is a big conspiracy behind the death of Unmay and not one but a group of people are behind this incident. However, the police were unable to get any headway," Chinmay said.
Unmay's counsel, Bana Mohanty pointed fingers at police investigation saying “If you (police) did not find any clues in the murder, does it mean that you would close the case. Terming such a sensitive death case as ‘suicide’ is just very saddening. When the final report is received we will oppose it and pray before the court for re-investigation,” he said.
Earlier on Thursday, putting an end to the speculations, the Twin City Police Commissioner, YB Khurania had stated that Unmay was not murdered and he had committed suicide.
Speaking on the re-investigation of Unmay’s death case, Khurania said that “All the evidences we have collected and the opinions we sought are subjected to the scrutiny of the concerned court. We will be placing our final investigation report and a final call will be taken by the court. If it orders to reopen the case, then we will do it.”
On March 22, Unmay’s half burnt dead body was recovered from Kuakhai River bank. After his death a ‘sex tape’ involving Padhi and a girl surfaced, triggering speculations. Police had started probe suspecting foul play and registered a murder case under Sections 302 & 201 of the Indian Penal Code.
