New Delhi/Bhubaneswar: The first separation surgery of conjoined twins Jaga and Kalia of Kandhamal was successfully completed at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi on Tuesday.
The operation went on for nearly 20 hours after which the twins have been kept on ventilator.
“After giving anaesthesia to the twins on Monday at 5 am, the operation started at 10.30 am. It continued till 6 am today and they were brought out of the operation theatre at 8 am,” informed AIIMS neurosurgery department head Prof Ashok Mohapatra.
This is the first stage of operation and the next stage will be held after checking their progress. Meanwhile, they are kept on ventilator and are in stable condition as the first operation was successful, he added.
It may be mentioned that a team of 40 surgeons including experts from Japan were engaged for the surgery.
The twins are 27-months-old and problems of their survival were increasing as they were growing older.
Born to Bhuan Kanhar and Puspanjali Kanhar of Milipada in Kandhamal district, the plight of the twins was highlighted after OTV first broke the news about them a couple of months ago.
