Bhubaneswar: Joydeep Nayak, the 1991-batch Tripura cadre Odia IPS officer against whom the State vigilance has registered a case for allegedly misappropriating Rs 88 lakh, is untraceable after being discharged from Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi yesterday.
Highly placed sources said despite several attempts, vigilance officials of Odisha have failed to trace the officer, who was on deputation in Odisha from 2012 till January this year and served in several positions.
Nayak was reportedly admitted at the hospital for knee surgery.
When contacted by OTV, the doctor supposedly treating Nayak remained tight lipped about the latter’s treatment and other details. However, sources said he was admitted in the hospital on June 18.
Meanwhile, vigilance officials averred that Nayak will be arrested soon.
“We will trace him out for sure. Since he is a government servant, he can’t escape from the clutches of law. We will arrest him soon,” Director, (Vigilance), RP Sharma said.
Meanwhile when OTV contacted Tripura police about Nayak’s whereabouts, it said since the officer in question didn’t resume his duties under the police department on his return from deputation in Odisha, it doesn't have details on his current location.
If sources are to be believed, Nayak is currently posted as the director of fire services in Tripura.
On Thursday, the vigilance department registered a case against six persons, including Nayak, for embezzling Rs 88 lakh in the name of providing computer training to SC/ST students. The five persons arrested for their involvement in the case yesterday are the then additional SP Basanta Pradhan, former stenographer Pracheta Mishra, owner of Cuttack-based Axis Computer Asutosh Mishra, general manager of Axis Computer Chandi Charan Patnaik and Mamata Rout, owner of a printing press have been arrested.
