Puri: Repair of Jagmohan, the chamber facing the sanctum sanctorum of Sri Jagannath Temple in Puri, began today. In the preliminary stage, a part of the dilapidated chamber was dug up to 2.5 feet spanning across 3 layers with the help of a drilling machine.
The first layer comprised granite while the other two layers were of khondalite and sandstone. After examination, steel pillars will be erected to connect the upper beam of the chamber which will protect the Jagmohan, said Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) sources.
However, due to some technical glitches, work had to be stopped midway and will resume next week.
“After digging for around 2.5 feet, the machine which was being used broke down. The spare part was not available here. We are sourcing the spare part from Bhubaneswar after which the work will resume on Monday,” said Dharmapada Mishra, member of the technical committee.
“Not much was done today. The work will resume on Monday. Today, we examined three layers and the rocks were found to be in good condition,” said GC Mitra, the chairman of the technical committee
The repair work is being done in presence of ASI experts and technical core committee members.
