Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) today said the heat wave condition would prevail in Odisha till next four days while there would be Norwester in some parts of the state during the period.
Talking to OTV, Dr Sarat Chandra Sahu, Director, Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, said at present, the wind flow towards the land in coastal Odisha is from south-west direction. However, the direction of the wind flow changes to north-west at 900 metres from the mean sea level which becomes hot and dry due to wind flow from the north-west and Central India where the temperature is more than 40 degrees and above. As the wind in the lower atmosphere along the coast carries more moisture comes in contact with the hot wind in the upper air, it creates favourable condition for Norwester (Kalabaisakhi).
Sahu also said while Kalabaisakhi generally takes place mostly in coastal and north Odisha, it also occurs in some parts in interior Odisha if there are more cloud mass.
He further said a cyclonic circulation has formed over Assam and Meghalaya at 900 metres from the mean sea level. Besides, a trough line has also formed over north-west Rajasthan across Assam through Bihar and North West Bengal. Under its influence, there is possibility of Kalabaisakhi in some coastal pockets like Jajpur, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj. “The possibility of Kalabaisakhi would be more from May 28 till next week,” he added.
Meanwhile, a Met release this evening said Bhawanipatna was the hottest place in the state today with 43.7 degree Celsius each while temperature remained at 40 degrees and above in 11 places. They were: Bhubaneswar (40), Angul (41.7), Jharsuguda (41.4), Sambalpur (40.4), Sundargarh (42), Hirakud (42.1), Talcher (41.5), Balangir (42), Phulbani (40.5), Titlagarh (42.5) and Sonepur (43).
Temperature in the state capital, which was 40.2 degrees yesterday, came down marginally to 40 degrees. However, the relative humidity went up to 65 percent making the life of the people miserable.
