Bhubaneswar: Former DG of Fire Services and Home Guards Binoy Behera passed away today at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar. He was 60.
A 1982-batch IPS officer, Behera retired from service recently on October 31.
However, a day after his retirement, Behera fell sick and was admitted to a private hospital here. Sources said Behera was suffering from pneumonia and later went into coma.
Behera was first the Commissioner of Twin City Commissionerate Police (Cuttack-Bhubaneswar). He also served as Superintendent of Police in a number of police districts including Rourkela, Puri and Mayurbhanj.
Behera was also Chairman-cum-Managing Director of the Orissa State Road Transport Corporation (OSRTC).
Behera also worked as a Management Trainee at Steel Authority of India and a Probationary Officer at State Bank of India before joining the elite IPS in 1982. A Post Graduate in English Literature from University of Delhi, Behera was known for his passion for cultural and literary activities.
Meanwhile, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and DGP RP Sharma condoled the death of the former Fire Services DG. "Saddened by the untimely demise of the retired senior IPS Officer," Pradhan tweeted.
"His passing away is a huge loss for the IPS fraternity. Nobody can take his place," said the DGP.
Former Odisha DGP SN Tiwari said, “Binoy Behera was a wildlife lover and had done extensive research on elephants. I am deeply saddened by the news of his demise."
Former DGP Sanjeev Marik said, "Binoy Behera was a 1982 batch officer and I was a 1981 batch officer. Therefore, we had different kind of rapport. He was a big-hearted and outspoken person."
Gopal Nanda, former DGP, said Binoy Behera was an outstanding officer.
Former DG Fires service BB Mohanty informed Binoy Behera had got a PhD after completing research on elephants. His demise is certainly a great loss for Odisha Police.
Besides, the IPS Association expressed sorrow and said in a tweet message, "We are saddened at demise of Dr Binoy Kumar Behera, IPS, 1982. A versatile officer he wore many hats as fine sportsman, singer, actor, and contributed immensely to policing. He was also the first Commissioner of Cuttack & Bhubaneswar. Our deepest condolences to the family."
