Bhubaneswar: It is surprising that despite several key discussions being held in Parliament, what gets covered is disruption, said Lok Sabha member Gaurav Gogoi on Saturday.
While speaking during a discussion on ' Making of Young Parliamentarians in Lok Sabha- Absence of Constructive Debates' at OTV's Foresight 2018, Gogoi tried to draw contrast between reality and expectation in the present situation in the country.
"In today's noisy world of tweets and breaking news, is the long policy based discussion in Parliament attractive enough? How many of us were glued when the agrarian crisis was discussed for three days in Parliament? But unfortunate what gets covered is the disruptions," said Gogoi.
Gogoi further stated that voters in a democratic set up will not vote for a MP just for participating in a number of debates in Parliament. Rather relationship with people he is representing and what work done in constituency development fund matters.
"Compared to a debate in Parliament, a voter focuses more on our relationship, development performance and Parliamentary debates also matters. Now it is more pertinent to find ways to make the debates more accessible, relevant, meaningful to young people and larger electorate," Gogoi added.
While participating in the discussion, BJD's MP Kalikesh Singh Deo stated that in the last 30 years of political evolution, Parliamentary proceedings are now basically to authorise what the executive has decided already.
"In today's political structure be it the Prime Minister or Chief Ministers are the absolute bosses and cutting across all political parties in India, one has to do 'Ji Huzuri' as you do not have any choice," said Kalikesh.
Kalikesh further stated that Anti-defection law should be changed to allow politicians to raise voice against things which they don’t like about their party.
