Balasore: In yet another incident of farmer suicide in the State, a farmer of Mulukaida village under Soro block of Balasore district attempted to end his life allegedly over debt burden.
Identified as Sukura Mallik, the 70-year-old farmer had taken a loan of Rs 18000 from a self-help group (SHG). He used up the money in the treatment of his wife suffering from cancer.
Mallik had to pay Rs 500 as interest every month for the loan amount. However, failing to meet the amount, he took the extreme step of ending life by consuming poison.
Mallik is undergoing treatment at Balasore hospital. He has two sons; while one died long ago, no one knows the whereabouts of his second son.
In a similar incident of debt burden and suicide in the State, a farmer of Asarla village under Bolagarh block in Khurdha district committed suicide on Thursday. As per reports, deceased Laxmidhar Sethi consumed poison allegedly due to debt burden.
