Cuttack: Odisha Police DG RP Sharma today said the new Cyber crime forensic laboratory coming up at the state science laboratory will begin functioning soon. Besides three cyber police stations approved by the state government are also on the verge of opening while a proposal to set up three more cyber cells is also on the anvil. Together these units will add teeth to the cyber crime fighting mechanism.
Addressing a two-day training programme on cyber crime investigation at Cuttack, Sharma said that number of cyber cases increased to 669 by October this year from 378 in 2016.
Stressing the importance of upgrading cyber forensic science, the DGP said there is an ever increasing need for forensic analysis and need to preserve data for use during trials and for that a forensic laboratory is almost ready to come up at the state science forensic laboratory.
“We used to send our samples for study to Hyderabad and Kolkata. We would be self sufficient to some extent,” the DGP said.
This year we are laying greater emphasis on registration of more number of cyber crimes but at the same time we have to develop our capabilities to handle those crimes. Now that the government has decided to establish three more cyber crime police stations in Berhampur, Rourkela and Sambalpur, we are proposing three more cyber crime cells at Balasore, Bhubaneswar for Commissionerate Police and another for Jeypore in Koraput, Sharma said.
