Nabarangpur: Corn farmers in the district have been a worried lot due to distress sale of their agricultural produce as government-operated market yards have not yet started procurement.
They have been forced to sell corn at throwaway prices to traders after corn stocks started germinating.
Dharmendra Mohapatra, a corn farmer, said, "Though in the Regulated Market Committee (RMC) meeting, the Nabarangpur collector asked us to sell corn at market yards at Rs 1,425 per quintal, the government is yet to start the procurement. After corn starts germinating, farmers are forced to go for the distress sale.
Sebaka Garada, another corn farmer, said, "Corn growers are not getting the right price due to which they face difficulties to repay loan."
Farmers in the district have been demanding immediate procurement of corns by market yards so that corn growers get right price for their produce.
On the other hand, Abakash Behera, secretary of the regulated market committee, said, "The higher ups have been informed about the issue and process is on to ensure that farmers get the right price of corn."
