Kendrapara: Panic gripped Mathasahi village near Nikirai area in the district after some combustible substance erupted out of the ground during the digging of a bore well this morning.
The incident took place in the backyard of Sadasiba Mallick’s residence in the village.
Villagers suspect the substance to be some combustible gas after finding that flames leapt up when a burning match stick was dropped into the well.
According to Mallick, a loud sound was heard and water burst out of the hole created for the installation of the bore well after digging the ground for about 50 feet.
“After the explosion, some gas started erupting out of the hole. When we exposed it to flame, it started burning. Following the incident, all people engaged in the installation of the bore well left the spot”, Mallick added.
Meanwhile, the district collector has ordered a probe into the matter.
