Bhubaneswar: The Nandankanan Zoological Park got its new member after Pampeta, the oldest Chimpanzee delivered her sixth baby at the feeding-cum-resting chamber on Friday night.

According to reports, the condition of the newborn chimpanzee is stable.

Though Pampeta was expected to deliver baby on October 2, a team of veterinary doctors were closely monitoring her health at the zoo.

Earlier, the Nandankanan zoo authorities had brought Pampeta along with a male chimp Julu from Singapore zoo under an exchange programme in June 1994.

Pampeta had delivered its first baby Barsha on May 12, 1998. However, the baby had died in six months. She was again blessed with another baby Purnima in 2001 while her third baby in 2006 was killed by Julu.

The oldest female chimpanzee later gave birth to Subhadra on July  2010 and the chimpanzee was sent to the Patna zoo and Nandankanan got a giraffe in her exchange. Pampeta delivered her fifth child John in 2014 and it had died two years later.
