Bhubaneswar: BJP on Monday lambasted the ruling party over appointment of Naba Kumar Nayak as the State Election Commissioner.

The saffron party was up in arms alleging that the State government has appointed a junior level officer to the constitutional post.

BJP spokesperson Pitambar Acharya said, "The service rule has been violated by appointing Nayak as the SEC. A retired HC or district judge or civil servant of the chief secretary rank should have been appointed."

"We believe a constitutional crisis will usher in the State with Nayak's appointment," Acharya stated. A delegation of party leaders will also lodge complaint with the Governor, he added.

Declining the charges, BJD spokesperson Debasis Nayak said, "The SEC position is a  constitutional post. The State government recommended three names of which the Centre selected one for the post. The decision has been taken as per the law and the State has no role in choosing Nayak's name."
