Puri: Demanding houses for the victims of cyclone Phailin, the Puri district Phailin Action Committee resorted to a 24-hour bandh at Brahmagiri and Kurshnaprasad blocks in the district today.
As part of the protest, members of the body have blocked the road from Puri to Prayagi by burning tyres at various squares They have also blocked the Puri-Satapada NH-316 at various places disrupting the vehicular movements on the roads. Besides, shops and other business establishments remained closed at the places affecting normal life.
The committee members alleged that the affected people of cyclone Phailin have not received any compensation yet. The Government had assured to provide housing at Rs 3.50 lakh with the help of World Bank to affected people residing within five kilometres from the coast. “While the affected people of Khurdha and Ganjam districts have already been given such houses, the programme has not been implemented in Puri district yet,” alleged a member of the committee.
The committee has staged agitation, road blockade and Garjan Samavesh over the matter, but in vain. The body holds the local MLAs for this, he further said. Though the state government did not pay heed to the genuine demand, the committee resorted to the 24-hour bandh today, the member added.
