Puri: A Puri-based lawyers' association has reportedly sent a legal notice to e-commerce giant Amazon over alleged unauthorised sale of "Nirmalya Mahaprasad" of Lord Jagannath through online.
The CEO of Amazon India has been given 20 days time to reply on the matter. The lawyers have threatened to approach the court and file a petition if the e-commerce major does not come up with a satisfactory reply on the matter and stop the sale of Nirmalya, informed Biswajit Pradhan, a lawyer with the Puri Lawyers' Association
Similarly, another case was filed at Singhadwar police station by Suar Mahasuar Nijog against the sale of the Maharasad. In their complaint, the servitor outfit alleged that Amazon is selling Nirmalya without its prior permission.
The nijog has urged the district superintendent of police (SP) and Shree Jagannath Temple Administration to conduct a probe into the matter and ensure punitive action.
Krushana Chandra Pratihari, secretary of Suar Mahasuar Nijog, said, "Jagannath temple is closed since nine months due to Covid-19 pandemic, so there is no Nirmalya here. So question arises as to how Amazon managed to procure the prasad. We suspect cooked homemade foods are being sold in the name of the Nirmalya."
"This is an insult to Jagannath temple and Nirmalya. We strongly protest the move and demand stringent action," he added.
According to sources, some servitors levelled allegations few days ago that Nirmalya also known as dry Mahaprasad is being sold on Amazon website at Rs 59 per packet containing 25 grams with a delivery charge of Rs 50.
