Bhubaneswar: State Police on Tuesday said it was taking "appropriate steps" to counter any possible terror attack after receiving intelligence inputs about such attack in the state.

"We have been taking precautionary steps in Puri where lakhs of devotees congregate for the annual car festival of Lord Jagannth," Director General of Police (DGP) Manmohan Praharaj told PTI.

Praharaj, however, said the state government had no information regarding terrorists plan to target missile launching base in Balasore district. However, security cover already exists in sensitive installations in the state including the missile launching base in the state, sources in the Home department said.

The DGP had on June 21, the car festival day, told the media about intelligence inputs about possible terrorist attack in the holy town of Puri.

Assam DGP Jayanta Narayan Choudhury, had however, told PTI in Guwahati that jihadi outfits like Lashkar-e-Taiba was planning attacks in Odisha and Maharashtra. "Our intelligence inputs point to such attacks being planned. Among the targets are Puri where lakhs of pilgrims gather for events like the famous Ratha Yatra," he said.

"Besides, there are strategic targets in Odisha like the missile-launching range at Balasore. As for Maharashtra, Mumbai has always been a target due to its status as the commercial capital of the country," he said.
