Puri: Amid the ongoing controversy over journalist Abhijit Iyer making derogatory remarks on Konark Sun Temple, questions are now been raised on the role of Odisha Police after the preliminary FIR lodged in connection with the case was found altered.
According to sources, one, Bimbadhar Beura in his FIR against Iyer at Konark Police Station yesterday had stated that the latter's comments on Konark Temple were derogatory. Moreover, the complainant had mentioned that Iyer was in MP Jay Panda's chopper and flying of helicopter around the Konark Sun Temple poses a security threat. The complainant quite clearly stated that Iyer was the one who made such irresponsible comments.
But in a dramatic turn of events, the original FIR was changed while registering the case today.
As per reports, in the current FIR, charges levelled against Jay Panda are similar to those slapped against Iyer.
"Accused persons namely Abheejit Ayar and Baijayant Panda have given unpalatable and irresponsible remarks on Konark sun temple by uploading views on social media (sic)," the current FIR read.
Even police could not give satisfactory answers explaining such discrepancies.
Investigations are done taking into consideration the evidence that is available, said IG Central Range, Soumendra Priyadarshi.
"Don't understand why a case will be registered against Baijayant Panda. He has no involvement in the matter. This will undermine the case," said senior lawyer, Madhumadhab Jena.
Iyer was arrested in Delhi by a two-member team of Odisha police today based on two separate cases registered at Konark Police Station and Saheed Nagar Police Station in Odisha with charges under sections 150 (A), 295 (A), 290 of IPC and 66 of IT Act.
However, he was later released on conditional bail till September 28 on submission of a surety of Rs 1 lakh.
