Bhubaneswar: A day after ex-MLA Anup Sai was arrested on charges of killing a woman and her daughter in 2016, Chhattisgarh police reportedly detained his driver Burdhan Toppo for his alleged involvement in the sensational double murder case.

Toppo’s family members claimed that the cops picked him from their house late last night. Sources said Toppo is being interrogated at an undisclosed place by cops.

“My father was at home throughout the day yesterday. Three to four cops came and took him along with them,” said Toppo’s daughter adding that her father was working as a driver with Anup Sai for the last eight to nine years.

Family members claimed that on the day of the arrest of Anup Sai, Toppo had taken the family members of the ex-MLA to Raigarh.

“We do not know anything and we only know that my father is innocent. We urge police and administration to conduct a detailed probe into the incident,” Toppo’s daughter added.

Toppo’s wife informed, “We do not know where the police took my husband.”

It is pertinent to mention here that Raigarh police on Friday arrested ex-MLA Anup Sai for his alleged involvement in the brutal murder of Kalpana Das and her minor daughter in 2016.

Addressing a presser, Raigarh SP, Santosh Kumar Singh yesterday revealed that Sai along with his driver Burdhan had killed Kalpana and her daughter with a blunt iron-rod like object and disposed their bodies.

The duo made all attempts to ensure that the bodies could not be identified by crushing them under an SUV multiple times, Singh said.

Chhattisgarh police informed that Sai along with his driver Burdhan killed Kalpana and her daughter near Hamirpur forest. Though Sai only wanted to kill Kalpana, later he killed her daughter fearing that he could be exposed.

Meanwhile, Raigarh Additional SP Abhishek Verma said a special team of police will visit Odisha for probe in connection with the double murder case.

"As per the confession of the prime accused, it is suspected that more person were involved in the murders. So a special team is being sent to Odisha for further probe into the case,” Verma said.

Verma said that the police will seek the permission of the court to conduct Narco test on the prime accused which will make more revelations in connection with the murders.

He further said efforts are on to recover the vehicles and weapons used in the murders. "As the murders happened in May, 2016, it will be a challenge for us to recover the weapons and vehicles used to execute the crime," he added.
