Over 610 Kg Ganja Seized In Odisha's Kalahandi, One Held

A suspected drug peddler was arrested and around 619 kg of cannabis seized from a pick-up truck in Odisha's Kalahandi district, police said.

The vehicle, which had a fake registration number, was intercepted in Kesinga police station area on Tuesday following a tip-off, they said.

The contraband, estimated to be worth Rs 24.76 lakh, was found concealed inside maize sacks, Superintendent of Police Saravana Vivek M said, adding, the truck driver was apprehended.

In 2021, 33 suspected smugglers have so far been arrested in the district and 3.38 tonnes of cannabis seized, the SP said.

Covid-19: Odisha Reports 8 Fatalities And 762 Positive Cases

The Covid-19 death toll in Odisha surged to 8,070 while positive tally climbed to 10,13,567 with eight fatalities and 762 cases, 102 cases between 0 and 18 years of age, on Wednesday, informed State Information and Public Relations Department.

In terms of death, Khordha and Dhenkanal reported two each fatalities while Angul, Balasore, Keonjhar and Koraput detected one each death, said a data released by the State Health and Family Welfare (H&FW) Department.

Khordha topped the list with 314 fresh cases in the last 24 hours followed by Cuttack (119), Mayurbhanj (29), Sundargarh (26), Jagatsighpur (24),  Kendrapara (21), Angul (20), Jajpur (19), Balasore (17), Puri (16) and Bargarh (13).

Other districts which reported less than 10 cases are- Bhadrak (9), Dhenkanal (9), Keonjhar (7), Sambalpur (7), Koraput (6), Rayagada (6), Ganjam (4), Jharsuguda (4), Nuapada (3), Nayagarh (3), Sonepur (3), Bolangir (2), Nabarangpur (2), Deogarh (1), Gajapati (1), Kalahandi (1), Kandhamal (1) and Malkangiri (1). Boudh district reported nil cases today.

A total of 64, 602 samples were tested in the State in the last 24 hours while 1,85,99,037 samples have been tested so far. The Test Positivity Rate (TPR) for the day stood at 1.11%.

The active cases stood at 6,853 and 9,98,591, including 801 persons on Tuesday have recuperated from the disease so far.

Woman, Son Critical In Bhadrak Fire Mishap

A woman and her son sustained critical burn injuries after a major fire engulfed their house at Dalanga pachayat under Dhamnagar block on Bhadrak district on Tuesday.

The duo sustained injuries while trying to evacuate the cattle tied in the shed.
