Berhampur: A 25-year-old youth was shot dead and a child sustained injury when miscreants opened fire on them at Banthapalli on the outskirts of the town last night, police said.
The deceased was identified as Ram Chandra Padhy of the same village and wanted by the police in several cases. At least four motorcycle-borne miscreants shot at Padhy, while he was attending a marriage reception in the village at about 11 pm.
The eight-year-old child, who was standing near Padhy, sustained injuries when a bullet hit him, police said. The condition of the child was stated to be serious.
Police said long-standing rivalry between two groups in the village was suspected to be the fallout of the incident. At least 20 cases and counter cases were registered against two groups, mainly Padhy and Bisoi groups, in the village since last four years.
SP (Berhampur) Shefeen Ahmed K said the accused have so far been identified.a
