Varanasi: A "mentally unstable" inmate in the women`s prison at Kotwali police station allegedly bludgeoned a homeguard to death tonight, police said.

The woman hid in a bush and hit homeguard Usha Srivastava (45) with a stone when a search was on for her, Additional SP (City) Mansingh Chauhan said.

Srivastava was rushed to a hospital where she was declared brought dead, he said.

The inmate was found in a semi-naked condition three days ago, and a process was on to get her admitted to a hospital, he added.
