Bhagalpur: A 41-year-old woman, Sunaina Jha alias Suman Jha, kept in solitary confinement by her father Balmiki Jha at a house in Bhagalpur district for ten years, is now a free person thanks to the efforts of the Bihar Woman Commission.

Balmiki Jha and his family members had declared Sunaina insane and kept her confined in a room at their house at Kashtikari village under Dhandhi Belari panchayat Bhagalpur, Senior Superintendent of Police Sanjay Singh said today. Alerted by a secret information, the state Women`s Commission chairman Kahkansha Parveen and Singh went to the house of Jha and rescued the girls on monday evening.

Sunaina was taken out from the room after which she took a bath, put on new clothes arranged for her and then admitted to Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College Hospital here, Singh said. Later, doctors who attended on her ruled out symptoms of mental derangement. The travails of Sunaina began soon after she got married around 15 years ago to Giridih-based Raju Jha and her husband began cheating her and deserted her four years ago, official sources said.

Later, she started staying with her sister Banmala before returning to her parents` home in Kastikeri in 2000. According to villagers, her plight worsened with the death of her mother a year later and subsequent deaths of other family members.
