For the first time since 1969, mercury in Bhubaneswar remained at 40 degrees Celsius or above for the longest streak in the month of April breaking a decades-old record.
As per IMD Bhubaneswar weather scientist, Umashankar Das’ post on his X handle, for the first time since 1969, Bhubaneswar recorded temperature at 40 degrees Celsius or above continuously for 17 days in the month of April.
Bhubaneswar's longest heat wave spell
This spell started on April 15 and ended on May 1, making it the longest spell with maximum day temperature touching 40 degrees Celsius or above.
On April 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30 and May 1, Bhubaneswar recorded 41.2 degrees Celsius, 41.9 degrees Celsius, 41.7 degrees Celsius, 43.6 degrees Celsius, 41.4 degrees Celsius, 40.5 degrees Celsius, 41.6 degrees Celsius, 43.8 degrees Celsius, 41.8 degrees Celsius, 43.2 degrees Celsius, 42.2 degrees Celsius, 40.5 degrees Celsius, 44.6 degrees Celsius, 43.2 degrees Celsius, 41.3 degrees Celsius, 45.4 degrees Celsius and 41.3 degrees Celsius respectively.

Last time the longest spell of heat wave was experienced in the capital city in April was in 2016. It lasted for 10 days from April 6 to April 15.
Some relief comes by
However, after a 17-day-long blistering heat wave spell, the capital city of Bhubaneswar breathed a sigh of relief on Thursday as the temperature dropped below 40 degrees Celsius.
On Thursday, the capital city recorded its maximum temperature at 39 degrees Celsius.
