Monsoon is waning over the state and with it, mercury is rising. In the past 24 hours, Puri in Odisha recorded a maximum temperature of 36 degrees Celsius. It was quite close to the earlier record of 36.8 degrees Celsius registered in the August of 1972. As per sources, yesterday's temperature of 36 degrees Celsius was the second highest temperature recorded in the month of August in 126 years.
Commenting on the development, Weather Scientist at the IMD's Bhubaneswar Centre, Umashankar Das said, "The temperature of 36 degrees Celsius registered in Puri is considered to be the second highest temperature on record between 1896 and 2022 for the month of August. The all time record for the month was recorded on August 1, 1972, when Puri registered maximum temperature of 36.8 degrees Celsius."
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday issued a ‘yellow warning’ for thunderstorm activities in different parts of Odisha.
As per the IMD, the thunderstorm activities are likely to continue till August 14, 2023. Similarly, light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely to occur at a few places over the districts of Odisha on the occasion of Independence Day on August 15.
