Bhubaneswar: The Southwest Monsoon has arrived in Odisha, the Regional Meteorological Centre of the IMD informed today. The monsoon season which generally marks its presence around June 10 every year has made onset in its usual time.
The conditions are also favourable for its advancement into the remaining parts of the State in the next 48 hours, the Met department has informed through its Twitter handle.
The weatherman has already issued a forecast predicting torrential downpours in the State between June 10 and 13 in the wake of a low pressure over Bay of Bengal.
"Monsoon touched some parts of the State today. Under its effect South Odisha and Bolangir experienced heavy rainfall. The progress of the monsoon has been very good so far and Odisha is likely to get normal rainfall this year. The State will witness more than normal rainfall in June,” said senior scientist of IMD Rajendra Jenamani.
Earlier a day before, Odisha Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) directed all Collectors and Municipal Commissioners to take precautionary measures ahead of heavy rains predicted by IMD between June 10 and 14.
As predicted by IMD, under the influence of low pressure likely to be formed over North Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood around June 11, widespread rainfall activity with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall and extremely heavy rainfall very likely to occur over large number of districts of Odisha during June 10 and June 14.
"During such intense and continued rainfall, flash flood/ flood like situation may occur in different rivers, nullah and water bodies. In hilly areas landslides may occur. Water logging may be experienced in different parts including urban/ low lying areas," the SRC said.
