The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday announced that the southwest monsoon is expected to make its onset over the South Andaman Sea, parts of the Southeast Bay of Bengal, and the Nicobar Islands around May 13, 2025. This marks the official beginning of the monsoon season, which plays a critical role in the agricultural and economic landscape of the country.

According to a statement issued by the IMD, current meteorological conditions, including lower-level winds, sea surface temperatures, and atmospheric circulation patterns, are becoming increasingly favorable for the advancement of the monsoon into the region.

The arrival of the monsoon in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is traditionally the first sign of the monsoon’s progress across India. Following its onset in this region, the monsoon typically progresses northward and westward, eventually covering the entire subcontinent by July.

The IMD further mentioned that conditions will be continuously monitored and updated advisories will be issued based on the evolving weather scenario. The department also plans to release its detailed monsoon forecast for mainland India in the coming weeks, which will outline the expected onset date over Kerala — the official gateway of the monsoon into the Indian peninsula.
