The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has confirmed that the arrival of monsoon is likely to get delayed by a few days. The southwest monsoon is now expected to make an onset over Kerala by June 1.
Usually, the monsoon after reaching Kerala takes around 10 days to reach Odisha. So, if the monsoon reaches Kerala by June 1, it will reach Odisha by June 10. And, if it is delayed further, it may take more time to reach the state.
IMD had earlier predicted that this year the southwest monsoon would hit the Kerala coast by May 27.
“We have not given any forecast for monsoon arrival as yet,” said IMD DG Mrutyunjay Mohapatra adding, “We had said monsoon arrival is likely to be on May 27 with an error margin of +/-4 days.”
As per IMD, monsoon has already reached Andamans and is likely to move further in the southwest direction towards the Arabian Sea. Met experts say that conditions for the monsoon to arrive in Kerala would become favourable only if the winds gain stability and strength.
The Southwest Monsoon is likely to advance over some parts of Southwest Arabian Sea, some more parts of Southeast Arabian Sea, Maldives and Comorin area, South and East-central Bay of Bengal and some parts of Northeast Bay of Bengal during the next 48 hours.
Meanwhile, Weather expert Surendranath Pasupalak said under the impact of nor'wester, different places in Odisha will receive rainfall till May 31. From June 1, Odisha will experience heatwave conditions till the monsoon reaches the state.
Pashupalak also predicted that most places in Odisha will record over 44 degree Celcius or more on June 3 and 4. Humidity will also remain high during this period.
As per the latest IMD prediction, there is very little chance of monsoon rains in Odisha by June 10. But it can be more accurately said once the monsoon reaches Kerala. However, if there will be a low pressure in the Bay of Bengal, the prediction might change. But, there are no signs of low pressure for the next 10 days, said Pasupalak.
