Low Pressure concentrates into depression, to intensify further; check impact on Odisha
The well-marked low-pressure system on Thursday concentrated into a depression at 5:30 hours (IST) and is likely to move northwards and intensify further into a deep depression.
Centered approximately 100 km south-southeast of Sagar Island, near the coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh, this system is expected to move nearly northwards, potentially strengthening into a deep depression and cross West Bengal, Bangladesh coasts between Sagar Island and Khepupara, Bangladesh, by this afternoon.
Through a tweet, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) informed, “Yesterday’s well-marked low pressure (WML) concentrated into a depression at 0530 hours IST of today, the 29th of May 2025 over northwest Bay of Bengal off West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh coasts about 100km south southeast of Sagar Island.”
“It is likely to move northwards and intensify further into a deep depression and cross West Bengal, Bangladesh coasts between Sagar Island and Khepupara, Bangladesh by the afternoon of today,” the tweet further read.
Expected Impacts
Rainfall: Under its impact, several districts of Odisha are likely to receive rainfall. However, heavy to very heavy rainfall is anticipated in several districts of West Bengal, including Kolkata, North and South 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, East Burdwan, East Midnapore, Nadia, and Murshidabad. These conditions may lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas.
Wind: The depression is likely to bring gusty winds, with speeds reaching 30-40 km/h, particularly in coastal regions.
Sea Conditions: Fishermen have been advised against venturing into the sea due to rough conditions associated with the system.

Yellow Warning: Thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph and heavy rainfall is very likely to occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Keonjhar, Jajpur, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Angul, Dhenkanal, Koraput, Malkangiri, and Nabarangpur.

Yellow Warning: Thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph and heavy rainfall very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Sonepur, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Sudargarh, Deogarh, Balangir, Boudh, Bargarh, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Puri, Nayagarh, Khordha, Ganjam and Gajapati.
