Odisha is bracing for a respite from the soaring temperatures as meteorologists predict the influence of Kalbaisakhi storms. The expected storm activity from 20 March to 26 is anticipated to bring much-needed rain and thunderstorms to several districts, offering a potential decrease in the current oppressive heat.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) anticipated rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms sweeping through various districts, potentially lowering temperatures by 4 to 5 degrees Celsius.
The shift in weather patterns is attributed to the influence of cyclonic circulation and trap line, which is expected to drive the seasonal pre-monsoon activity, commonly referred to locally as Kalbaisakhi (Nor’wester), known for its intense thunderstorms during this period.
Weather experts forecast a fall in temperatures by 4 to 5 degrees Celsius, although the intense heat wave is set to continue until 19 March. Despite the arrival of Nor’wester, a severe heat wave warning remains in effect for the state for the next two days till March 19, highlighting the urgency of preparedness.
Current Heatwave Conditions:
The relief will arrive just in time, as residents endure severe heatwave conditions expected to last another two days. A red alert is in place until 19 March for the districts of Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Kalahandi, Sonepur, and Boudh, where the heat remains most intense.
Warnings Issued:
The IMD has issued an orange warning for the Angul, Balangir, and Sundargarh districts, indicating a significant risk from the persisting high temperatures. A yellow warning is noted for Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, and Gajapati, where conditions are considered dangerous but less extreme.
