A powerful Kalbaisakhi storm swept through several districts in Odisha, particularly affecting the tribal-dominated Mayurbhanj District. Although the Nor’wester rain brought much-needed relief from the ongoing heat wave, it has led to widespread damage as hailstones struck with force.
Over 50 people were injured as hailstorms lashed damaging roofing and shattering several vehicles. Both residential buildings and vehicles bore the brunt of the storm, with asbestos roofs being severely damaged and numerous cars and buses left with shattered windows.
Injuries and Medical Response
In a particularly devastating incident, more than 50 people sustained injuries during the severe weather event in Bangripossi, of which 20 were transferred to Baripada Medical College and Hospital. The injuries varied in severity, with some individuals incurring head injuries while others sustained damage to their limbs from the hailstones.
The less injured were given medical attention at Rairangpur Sub-Division Medical Centre. This calamity unfolded yesterday, affecting several blocks within the Rairangpur area with a combination of heavy rain and persistent hailstones that pounded for over half an hour.
Infrastructure Damage and Transportation Impact:
The storm, coupled with fierce winds, caused extensive structural damage, demolishing many roofs and asbestos constructions. Public transport was not spared; a bus travelling from Bangripossi to Rairangpur had its windows shattered on one side, though fortunately, all 40 passengers emerged unscathed.
Regional Impact and Community Response:
In Rairangpur Sub-Division, several regional blocks experienced thunder and turmoil, leaving a significant imprint on the local population. Despite the significant damage wrought by the stormy weather, no fatalities have been reported, a fortunate outcome amidst the havoc.
Meteorological Echo:
The Kalbaisakhi is a seasonal nor'wester, common in eastern India during the pre-monsoon period. Characterised by strong winds, it often brings along thunderstorms and hailstones, creating significant challenges for the local population.
