The Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar has issued a yellow warning for 17 districts of Odisha, forecasting the impact of Kalbaisakhi (Nor’wester storms) on Tuesday.

According to a bulletin issued by the weather office, a yellow alert has been issued for Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Sonepur, Boudh, Sundargarh, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, and Gajapati.

Wind Speed Likely to Reach 50 Kmph

Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are likely to occur at one or two places in these districts during afternoon and evening hours. Wind speeds are expected to reach 40–50 kmph during these brief but intense spells, the MeT office predicted.

Citizens in these areas have been advised to remain alert and take necessary precautions, especially those working outdoors or in open areas, as the sudden weather changes may pose safety risks. 

Cyclonic Circulation Active Over BoB

Meanwhile, a cyclonic circulation is active over the Bay of Bengal (BoB), shifting from the southwest and adjoining southeast region to the west-central and nearby southeast areas.

With an east-west trough running from Punjab to north Bangladesh, south Uttar Pradesh, south Bihar and north Gangetic West Bengal, the IMD forecasted that thunderstorm with lightning with surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph are very likely to occur in Odisha districts till May 26.

IMD regional centre in Bhubaneswar issued Orange Warning in several districts for the next five days (except Tuesday) and Yellow Warning from May 19 to May 24.
