IMD issues orange alert for heavy rainfall, thunderstorm and hailstorm in several Odisha districts

Thanks to thunderstorm activities, maximum temperature has registered a fall by about 2-3°C at one or two places over the districts of South Coastal Odisha in the past 24 hours, informed the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday.

Similarly, the maximum temperature was below normal by about 3-5°C at a few places over the districts of interior Odisha and at one or two places over the districts of Coastal Odisha.

The IMD today predicted that several parts of Odisha will continue to experience light to moderate or thunderstorm activities in the coming days as well. There is also a forecast for hailstorms and heavy rainfall in some parts of Odisha.  

Orange and yellow warnings have been issued by the IMD in this regard. As per IMD, light to moderate rain and thunderstorm activities will continue in different parts of Odisha till May 10, 2025.

Orange Warning: Thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph and hailstorm, heavy rainfall very likely to occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Gajapati, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada.

Yellow Warning: Thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph very likely to occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Angul, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Nabarangapur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Ganjam.

Day 2 (Valid from 0830 hrs IST of 04.05.2025 to 0830 hrs IST of 05.05.2025)

Orange Warning: Thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph and Heavy rainfall very likely to occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Gajapati, Ganjam.

Yellow Warning: Thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph very likely to occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Angul, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Kendrapada.

Day 3 (Valid from 0830 hrs IST of 05.05.2025 to 0830 hrs IST of 06.05.2025)

Yellow Warning: Thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph very likely to occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Keonjhar, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam.
