A cyclonic circulation has formed over the east-central Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood near Myanmar. The system is likely to intensify into a low pressure system in Bay of Bengal off Odisha coast around September 18, said India Meteorological Department (IMD) DG, Mrutyunjay Mohapatra on Thursday.
According to Mohapatra, there is no possibility of heavy rain in Odisha in the next two days as the deep depression which crossed the State coast now lies centred north Madhya Pradesh and south Uttar Pradesh. The system is gradually weakening and moving towards west.
“There is no possibility of heavy rain in Odisha and neighbouring Chhattisgarh in the next 48 hours. However, some regions in both the States may experience light to moderate rainfall,” said Mohapatra.

The IMD DG further said that the fresh low pressure which is likely to form over Bay of Bengal is being closely monitored.
Under the influence of the system, several districts in north Odisha will experience light to moderate rainfall from September 18, 2021.
“From September 19, several parts of north Odisha districts are likely to experience heavy rainfall for two days till September 20,” Mohapatra added.
It is pertinent to mention here that several parts of Odisha experienced heavy to very heavy rainfall for almost two consecutive days earlier this week. The heavy rain which lashed the twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar also threw normal life out of gear on September 13 and 14.
The heavy rains triggered by the deep depression subsequently led to the rise in the water level of several rivers in the State. Apart from Odisha, the system also triggered heavy rains in Chhattisgarh which forced the Odisha government to release excess water from Hirakud reservoir.
A low to medium flood in the Mahanadi river system is being expected as the upper catchment areas in Chhattisgarh have been receiving heavy rainfall due to the depression which crossed Odisha on Tuesday. The floodwater is being released from 24 sluice gates of Hirakud dam, as per a report received at 6 am on Thursday.
