Fresh low-pressure brewing in Bay of Bengal ahead of Dussehra; more rainfall in store for Odisha

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted the formation of a fresh low-pressure area over the west-central Bay of Bengal around October 6. This system is likely to cause light to moderate rain and thundershowers across several districts in Odisha from October 4 to October 10, potentially affecting Durga Puja celebrations. Odisha recorded 1090.8 mm of seasonal rainfall as against a normal of 1144.3 mm, with Malkangiri and Nuapada experiencing excess rainfall. Sheragada in Ganjam witnessed the highest recent rainfall.

A fresh low-pressure area is likely to form over the west-central Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood around October 6, predicted the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday.

Several districts in Odisha are very much likely to experience light to moderate rain and thundershowers from October 4 to October 10 under the influence of the system, the regional weather office said.

The low-pressure induced rain is likely to dampen the Durga Puja celebration in the State as the Sasthi puja of Goddess Durga falls on October 9. 

Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, informed that Odisha recorded 1090.8 mm seasonal cumulative rainfall as against its normal rainfall of 1144.3 mm between June 1 to September 29, 2024. 

During the period, Malkangiri and Nuapada recorded excess rainfall of 1978.7 mm and 1235. 6 mm respectively. Similarly, 24 districts reported normal rainfall and four districts were in the deficient category.

In the last 24 hours, Sheragada in Ganjam witnessed the highest rainfall of 41 mm, followed by Chandbali (26.9), Nawapara in Nuapada (24.4), the Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar informed in a tweet.

Meanwhile, there is no warning for rain in the State.
