It is winter and you will come across reports of trains and flights getting delayed or being cancelled due to dense fog conditions in different parts of the country. But do you know what fog is and its types?

Well, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) is the appropriate agency that has come forward to share relevant information regarding several aspects concerning weather conditions. On social media, several regional centres of IMD are sharing crucial information including weather forecast and other basic information that is useful for many.

So here is comprehensive information about fog and its types.

As per IMD, fog is defined as an obscurity in the surface layers of the atmosphere which is caused by a suspension of water droplets, with or without smoke particles containing various types of pollutants, and associated with visibility less than 1000 m.

What Are The Different Types Of Fog?

There are mainly two types of fog- radiation fog and advection fog. As per IMD, radiation fog is usually formed by the cooling of land after sunset by thermal radiation in calm conditions with clear sky. Similarly, advection fog occurs when moist air passes over a cool surface by advection (wind) and is cooled.

Classification Of Fog

Shallow fog: Visibility fall up to 500m
Moderate:  up to 200m
Dense: up to 50m
