The fresh cyclonic circulation formed over the north Bay of Bengal will trigger heavy to very heavy rainfall in Odisha, informed India Meteorological Department (IMD) DG Mrutyunjay Mohapatra on Thursday.
Speaking exclusively to OTV, Mohapatra said, “A fresh cyclonic circulation has formed over the north Bay of Bengal. This will further intensify into a low-pressure area by Friday. Under its influence, several parts of Odisha have been witnessing rainfall activities in the last 24 hours.”
“The system will have its impact on Odisha for the next couple of days with many areas in the State expecting heavy to very heavy rainfall activities. Apart from Odisha, east Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh will also witness heavy to very rainfall. Extreme rainfall can also be expected at some places on August 2 and 3,” Mohapatra added.
Asked about the possible flood threat in Odisha, Mohapatra said, “Other than the rain, flood depends on multiple factors. Though many places are expected to receive 20 cm rainfall, places in north Odisha have recorded deficit rainfall. So no matter how much it rains, there is a very low chance of flooding in north Odisha. However, when Mahanadi river belt is considered, there are chances of rainfall in the upper and lower catchment areas along with Chhattisgarh. So, it won’t be right for me to comment on the flood situation.”
Residents of low-lying areas must remain alert during the downpour. Besides, people must be cautious while driving as the visibility will drop during the intense spell of rain. If not necessary, do not go out of your home, Mohapatra advised.
Sharing details of rainfall activities in Odisha, Mohapatra said, “The State reported deficit rainfall in June, whereas in July good amount of rain has been recorded with south Odisha receiving the highest and north the lowest. As per the forecast, south Odisha is expected to receive low rainfall while it will be normal or above normal in northern Odisha during August and September.”
