A cyclone may be a reality in the Bay of Bengal next month. The region's top cyclone forecasting agency IMD has today officially hinted at such a possibility.
As per IMD DG Dr Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, the low-pressure area (LPA) that is likely to form over the South Andaman sea on November 30 has the potential to intensify into a cyclonic storm in due course.
Speaking exclusively to OTV, Mohapatra said, “There is a high possibility that the system may intensify into a cyclonic storm. The likely storm may have an impact on the North Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal. However, it is too early to predict its landfall place. The pinpoint location data will be released post the formation of the low-pressure in the Andaman sea.”
As per the IMD release, a low-pressure area is likely to develop over the South Andaman sea on and around November 30, and it is predicted to move in a west-northwestward direction. The system will intensify into a depression on December 2.
Under the impact of the system, rainfall activities will increase and wind speed reaching 40 to 50 kmph is likely to prevail in the Andaman Sea and adjoining the west-central Bay of Bengal and the south-west Bay of Bengal from November 30 to December 2.
As a consequence, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the seas, warned the IMD Chief.
"The exact path of the developing system will be made only after the formation of the low-pressure system," said Mohapatra.
The IMD DG, however, disclosed that under its influence, coastal regions of Odisha may receive rainfall from December 3. The district wise rainfall forecast will be released only after the formation of the low-pressure area in the Andaman sea, he observed..
But the outlook is rainfall will increase over Central, Northern Bay of Bengal Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Odisha from December 2 to 5.
