There will be a rise in the rainfall activity in several parts of Odisha as the remnant of cyclone Jawad, from deep depression to depression, approaches Puri, said India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday.
Currently, the Deep Depression (remnant of cyclone Jawad) is moving at a speed of 20 kmph during the past 6 hours. It now lay centered some 90 kms from Gopalpur and 120 kms from Puri. It is likely to move north-northeast wards, weaken further into a Depression and reach Odisha coast near Puri in next 6 hours.
IMD DG Mrutyunjay Mohapatra today said that already the coastal districts in Odisha from Ganjam to Kendrapara are experiencing rainfall activities under the influence of the system.
“We have issued a heavy rainfall warning at isolated parts of Odisha today. Similarly, wind at speed between 45 to 55 kmph, gusting to 60-65 is prevailing along Odisha coast,” said Mohapatra.
According to IMD DG, the rainfall activities will continue till evening hours in some parts of coastal districts in Odisha. The amount of rainfall in northern pockets will increase subsequently. IMD data indicates that Khalikote in Ganjam district recorded 158 mm of rainfall, followed by 107 mm in Nayagarh, Chhatrapur in Ganjam (86.6 mm), Banpur in Khorda (81 mm) and Ersama in Jagatsinghpur district received 68 mmm of rainfall.
Squally wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph is now prevailing over northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal. It would gradually decrease becoming 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph over northwest and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal by the evening of today It would decrease further becoming 30-40 gusting to 50 kmph over northwest Bay of Bengal by night of today, said IMD.
