In a major development, India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday predicted that the probable cyclonic storm is likely to move towards Bangladesh-Myanmar coast.
Briefing the media, IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said that as far as the forecast for the next five days is concerned, no warning has been issued for several eastern states like Odisha, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh as of now.
“But we need to remain watchful, especially the fishermen should not venture into the sea,” said Mohapatra.
According to the IMD DG, the system is being monitored closely and no warning for rainfall or wind has been issued for the eastern coast states – Odisha, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh. However, heavy rainfall warning has been issued for Tamil Nadu under the influence of another weather system.
“We will be watching closely the system and will update our forecast tomorrow. Appropriate forecast for the eastern states will be issued as and when required,” said Mohapatra.
Forecast So Far
A low pressure area has formed over Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining South Andaman Sea. It is likely to intensify into a depression on May 9 over the same region and further into a cyclonic storm over southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of East Central Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea on May 10.
It is likely to move initially north-northwestwards towards eastcentral Bay of Bengal till May 11. Thereafter, it is likely to recurve gradually and move north-northeastwards towards Bangladesh-Myanmar coasts.
