The low pressure area (LPA) over the central parts of the Andaman Sea and neighbourhood will intensify into a depression on Thursday and will further concentrate into a Cyclonic Storm in the subsequent 24 hours. It is likely to cross the coast as Severe Cyclonic Storm, said IMD DG Mrutyunjay Mohapatra.
However, the exact path and location of the cyclone crossing the coast and its intensity and time will be predicted once the depression formed, he said.
Speaking to OTV, Mohapatra said, “The low pressure area (LPA) over central parts of Andaman Sea and neighbourhood will intensify into a depression into over southeast and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal today and further turn into a Cyclonic Storm over central parts of the Bay of Bengal during the subsequent 24 hours.”
Subsequently, it is likely to move north-westwards, intensify further and reach near north Andhra Pradesh-Odisha coasts around December 4 in the morning as Severe Cyclonic Storm, added the DG.
“Though it is clear that the cyclonic storm will approach the Odisha coast, it is too immature to say where it will make landfall and other details. The exact position, path and location of the cyclone crossing the coast and its intensity and time will be known only after the depression is formed,” informed Mohapatra.
Under its influence, light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely to occur at many places over the districts of south coastal Odisha and at a few places over the rest districts of Odisha from the evening or night of December 3, said Mohapatra.
Meanwhile, yellow warning for heavy rainfall has been issued for Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri and Jagatsinghpur on December 3.
“The intensity of rainfall will increase the next day and light to moderate rain or thundershower is expected to occur at many places over the districts of south coastal Odisha and at a few places over the rest districts of Odisha,” informed Mohapatra.
Red warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at a few places with extremely heavy (>20cm) falls at one or two places over the districts of Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri and Jagatsinghpur on December 4.
Similarly, orange warning for heavy to very heavy has been issued for Kendrapada, Cuttack, Khordha, Nayagarh, Kandhamal, Rayagada and Koraput while yellow warning for heavy rainfall has been sounded in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur and Malkangiri districts on December 5.
On December 5, though the amount of rainfall will decrease, most places of North Coastal Odisha is likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall.
Orange warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall has been issued for Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Jajpur, Cuttack and Puri while yellow warning for heavy rainfall has been issued for Keonjhar, Angul, Dhenkanal, Nayagarh, Khordha, Ganjam and Gajapati districts on December 5.
Meanwhile, fishermen have been advised not to venture into southeast and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal on December 2 and 3, west-central & adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal and along & off north Andhra Pradesh - Odisha- West Bengal coasts during 3 and 5 while those are out in sea have been asked to return to the coast by the morning of December 2.
