A disturbing video of a passenger being assaulted aboard an Indian Railways train has gone viral, igniting widespread anger on social media. The passenger was allegedly targeted after complaining about a caterer overcharging him. The clip, first posted on Reddit’s popular r/IndianRailways community, has now resurfaced across platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram, with netizens calling out serious lapses in passenger safety and grievance redressal.

Complaint Turned Nightmare

The Reddit post, titled “Passenger complained to RailSeva about the caterer overcharging”, alleges a chilling sequence of events. After the passenger raised his concern via Railway Seva, his PNR and seat details were reportedly passed to IRCTC, which then informed the contractor involved. In a shocking turn, the contractor allegedly sent men to confront and assault the passenger mid-journey.

The 19-second viral footage shows a sleeper coach where several men, including some in catering uniforms, surround and attack the passenger. Disturbingly, other travellers can be seen watching silently, with no one intervening.

Social Media Reacts: Calls for Overhaul

An X user who shared the video claimed the incident occurred aboard the Somnath Jabalpur Express (Train No. 11463). Criticising the grievance process, they wrote, “Sharing passenger details with the very people the complaint is against makes no sense. Complaints should be handled by a neutral third party to ensure passenger safety.”

Another user slammed IRCTC’s lack of accountability: “You can’t expect customers to deal with contractors directly. This system encourages intimidation.”

A Wake-Up Call for Passenger Safety?

As the video continues to gain traction, demands for a safer, more transparent grievance system grow louder. For passengers, the incident is a chilling reminder of how speaking up can sometimes put them at risk.
