A wedding in Uttar Pradesh was called off after the groom demanded dowry after the marriage was solemnised and the newlywed couple was on their way to the groom’s house.
According to a LiveHindustan report, the incident took place in Uttar Pradesh’s Azamgarh district.
Reportedly, the wedding of a youth of Turkauli village was fixed with a girl from Jiyanpur on May 28 (Sunday).
The groom on the scheduled date arrived at the bride’s house in a grand procession and the wedding was completed as per the rituals.
During the ‘vidia’ ceremony, the groom demanded a chain and ring as dowry. However, when the bride’s family expressed their inability to fulfil his demand, the groom angrily left with his bride for his village.
While going home with the bride, the groom created a ruckus over the dowry demand midway and returned to his in-laws' house. He urged his in-laws to fulfill the dowry demands immediately.
Annoyed by his demands, the bride’s family detained the groom and his father in their home.
Later, the police on information reached the bride's home and freed the groom.
Meanwhile, the bride got angry over the groom’s dowry demand and indecent behaviour and refused to go with him.
Later, a panchayat was held and the marriage was annulled.
DK Singh, Sub-inspector of Jiyanpur Kotwali, was quoted saying by LiveHindustan that both parties mutually agreed to annul the wedding.
The groom’s family agreed to pay Rs 1.58 lakh to the bride’s family for the wedding cost and both parties will return the items they gave during the wedding.
