Bride marries groom’s younger brother on wedding day, here’s why

In an unusual incident, a bride called off her marriage after learning that the groom was dumb and later tied the nuptial knot with the groom's younger brother. The incident occurred in Uttar Pradesh's Mirzapur district.

According to a Navbharat Times report, the wedding of a youth of Neevi Visundarpur village was fixed with a woman of Anirudhpur Pashchim Patti.

On the wedding day, the groom arrived at the bride’s home in a grand procession along with others. However, all his dreams were shattered after the bride refused to marry him during the jai mala ceremony. 

The bride refused to marry the groom citing that the latter was mentally unsound. It led to a verbal spat between the two families and the police were called in.

Chetganj outpost in-charge reached the spot. After the intervention of the police, both families came to an agreement of marrying the bride to the groom’s younger brother.

Later, the wedding of the bride with the groom’s younger brother took place.

Chowki in-charge Harikesh Singh said that the police had reached the spot after receiving information about the bride's refusal to marry. However, both sides agreed on the matter of the bride marrying the groom's younger brother, after which the marriage was solemnised as per Hindu traditions.
