In a shocking display of violence at Srinagar Airport, a senior Army officer physically assaulted four SpiceJet employees after refusing to pay for excess cabin baggage. The incident, which occurred on July 26, has since gone viral, sparking outrage and calls for accountability.
Baggage Fee Sparks Assault
According to SpiceJet, the officer was scheduled to board a flight to Delhi with two cabin bags totaling 16 kg—well over the 7 kg limit for domestic flights. When informed about the additional charges, the officer refused to comply and forcibly entered the aerobridge, bypassing the boarding protocol. He was intercepted and escorted back to the gate by CISF personnel.
Violence at the Gate
What followed was a brutal assault on airline staff. Eyewitness videos show the officer using a metal information board to repeatedly strike SpiceJet employees, even as security personnel attempted to restrain him. The airline reports that one staff member suffered a spinal fracture, another a broken jaw, and a third collapsed unconscious from the beating.
Severe Injuries and Legal Action
SpiceJet stated that the attacker did not stop even after an employee fainted, continuing to punch and kick the downed staffer. Another suffered facial bleeding after a forceful kick to the jaw. All injured employees were rushed to the hospital and remain under treatment.
The airline has filed a police complaint and is initiating a request to ban the officer from flying. They have also reported the incident to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, demanding action for what they termed a “murderous assault.”
Army and CISF Respond
The CISF confirmed their personnel responded promptly to contain the situation. Meanwhile, Army officials have acknowledged the incident and assured cooperation with the investigation.
SpiceJet emphasized its zero-tolerance stance on violence, pledging to pursue the case to its full legal and regulatory conclusion.
