Mahindra Group chairman Anand Mahindra, who enjoys a massive 11.3M followers on X, often keeps his followers enthralled by sharing amazing videos online. Recently, the business tycoon shared a video of a PhD student selling ‘chicken pakoras’ and the video has gone crazy viral, sparking a debate online.
The 2-minute video begins with a US food vlogger Chris Lewis on the streets of Chennai in search of best chicken 65 in the town. Lewis’ hunt ends with the PhD student Tarul Rayan, whose chicken 65 has got more good reviews than other restaurants in the area.
Rayan then invites Lewis with his tasty chicken, leaving him speechless and wanting to eat more. Later, Lewis also tries a chicken cutlet prepared by Rayan. What comes next is a huge surprise for both Lewis.
During their casual interaction, Rayan reveals that he is a PhD student in Biotechnology and even shows his research articles on Google. This leaves Lewis surprised who gives Rayan a $100 as a token of love and respect.
However, Rayan initially refuses to take but keeps when Lewis insists that he wants to help him with his PhD. “You’re working hard for your school work. And, you’re doing a great job, man!” Chris says.
Anand Mahindra re-shared Lewis’ video and wrote, “What struck me as truly special, however, was the end, when he picks up his phone & the vlogger thinks he’s going to show him social media mentions of his stall—but instead, he proudly shows him online the research papers he has authored! Incredible. Unique. Indian.”
However, the video has sparked a debate on the income of a PhD student who would have earned in millions in other countries.
“No offense, this is not a great video. It's great he's working, but a PhD should use his skills in research, not just selling food. We've failed to provide him a setting where he can truly apply his education,” shared a user.
Another user shared, “YES he is selling food, YES may be the system has let him down, YES such talented individuals should get what they deserve...........BUT the best thing is the PRIDE with which Rayan is handling the situation.”
However, a few others were impressed with his dedication and humility and heaped praises on him.
“This story showcases the incredible resilience of Indians. A PhD candidate running a food stall part-time and proudly sharing his research instead of social media praise speaks volumes about dedication. Truly embodies the spirit of hard work and excellence!” shared a user.
