Villagers attack police station alleging inaction

Bhubaneswar:  At least 37 persons were arrested on Thursday following a clash between police and local villagers hailing from Andharua in the outskirts of the city. The irate villagers were demanding arrest of the persons involved in the murder of one Manas Mohapatra from Andharua.

Protesting polices` inaction in this case, the people in the locality stormed into the Chandaka police station and went on a rampage.

In a bid to disperse the mob, police lathi charged leaving many people injured. DCP Himansu Lal also sustained injuries on the head in stone pelting.

"Police chased the villagers away as they hurled stones at the police force," Lal said adding that the agitators also ransacked the police station and damaged records there.

In the incident, DCP and some other police personnel sustained minor injuries.

Earlier on Saturday, Manas Mohapatra’s body was found under mysterious circumstances at Khandagiri-Chandaka road side near Andharua area. Though the case has clear links to the land registration disputes, police is allegedly delaying the investigation and doing nothing significant in the case, the villagers alleged.

In fact, a day before the incident took place Manas went to Jatni to get some land registration done but never returned.
