Shillong: Security forces shot dead two highway robbers in an encounter in East Garo Hills district of Meghalaya, the police said today.

On being informed that a group of dacoits were looting coal-laden trucks plying on the NH-62 at Tamsura village, the police reached the spot at about mid-night. As they approached, the robbers fired indiscriminately following which the policemen retaliated, the sources said.

Two robbers were killed in the firing while other members of the gang fled. Four country made weapons resembling AK 47 and SLRs, three empty cartridges, a khukri and a bag were found from near the slain robbers, the sources said. Security along the NH 62 in the district have been intensified.
