Jajpur: Two engineering students were arrested on charges of robbing people at gun-point during night on the national highways, police said here today. The accused, identified as Guru Abhisek Mohanty alias Raja of Bhadrak and Abhisek Gourab Mohanty alias Bapuni of Jagatsinghpur district, were third year students of Dhabaleswar Engineering College at Khuntuni in Cuttack district.

A revolver, six mobile phones and a jeep was seized from their possession. According to police, on the night of January 14, Tapas Kumar Nanda, an employee of a private company, was robbed by the youths while returning home near Kuakhia along with his family. They had snatched away three mobile phones, Rs five lakh cash and gold jewelry at gun point near Chandikhole on National Highway-5.

On the basis of a complaint, police had launched a hunt to nab the gang. Acting on a tip off, a police team raided some places in Chhatia area last night and arrested the duo. Superintendent of Police Deepak Kumar claimed that the arrested duo was part of the four member inter-district looters` gang who had given a slip to police earlier.

"The gang is involved in as many as 18 snatching and loot incidents on the highway in Jajpur, Cuttack, Khurda and Angul districts," he said. The accused were forwarded to the court today and remanded to judicial custody after their bail applications were rejected, police said.
