In a sensational case of matrimonial fraud, 23-year-old Anuradha Paswan has been arrested in Bhopal for allegedly masterminding a large-scale scam that involved marrying 25 men across multiple states in just seven months.
Dubbed the "loot-and-scoot bride", Paswan is accused of conning her victims by marrying them under false pretenses and disappearing with valuables or cash shortly after the wedding night.
The scam was uncovered after a complaint was lodged in Sawai Madhopur, Rajasthan, by a victim identified only as "Gabbar." He alleged that Anuradha vanished with money and jewelry soon after their wedding, prompting a police investigation. Authorities soon uncovered a shocking pattern of deceit stretching across several states.
According to police reports, Paswan charged around Rs 2 lakh from each victim for the fake marriages. She would gain the trust of her targets—often men seeking arranged marriages—and then abscond with significant assets. Investigators believe she operated with the help of accomplices who may have played roles in setting up the fraudulent matches.
Police are now working to track down all of Paswan’s victims and unravel the full scope of the scam. Her arrest has sent shockwaves through local communities and raised awareness about the growing threat of matrimonial fraud.
This case highlights the urgent need for stricter verification processes in arranged marriages and the importance of background checks. Experts warn that the anonymity and urgency often associated with such setups can be exploited by fraudsters.
Authorities have urged anyone who may have been targeted by Paswan to come forward as the investigation continues to expand across state lines.
